🌳 Are you passionate about mangrove ecosystems, biodiversity, and climate science? Interested in exploring how mangroves contribute to our planet’s future? Then this is for you!
We are looking for thesis students to engage in cutting-edge interdisciplinary research on mangrove ecosystem health, biodiversity, and blue carbon, under the project “Development of Integrated Indices of State of Ecosystem Health in Conserved, Recolonized and Restored Mangroves (SECuRe Mangroves).”
This study will support mangrove conservation, restoration, and climate change adaptation by developing an integrated ecosystem health assessment framework.
🌿 Possible thesis topics include:
- Mangrove vegetation and structural complexity
- Microbial dynamics in mangrove ecosystems
- Mangrove degradation, change detection, and early warning (extents, percentage cover, canopy stress and damage)
- Species mapping and biodiversity assessment using hyperspectral RS
- Assessment of drivers of mangrove deforestation and degradation
- Mangrove fractional cover and height estimation
- Above-ground biomass estimation using various RS (including new systems such as NISAR and Biomass)
- Mangrove vulnerability/adaptability to sea-level rise
- Improving mangrove mapping with super-resolution and/or satellite embeddings
- Spatial multicriteria evaluation (SMCE) modelling for optimal planting and rehabilitation
