Publication Alert! New species of bubble snail found in the mangrove forest of Oriental Mindoro, Philippines

A new species of bubble snail, Bakawan nasuso, together with a new record Bakawan puti, were found in naturally recolonized mangrove forests (previously abandoned fishpond) in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines.

The study was authored by Dr. Gizelle A. Batomalaque from the UP Marine Science Institute, together with Lawrence Jacob C. Alterado, Jalyssa B. Fermo, and Dr. Severino III G. Salmo from the UP Institute of Biology. It was published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology.

The discovery shows that mangrove-recolonized ponds can serve as important habitats for small and often overlooked species. It also highlights the hidden biodiversity that recovering mangrove ecosystems can support.
