The project co-sponsored a webinar on eDNA meta/barcoding on 6 December 2021 (also as part of the 35th Anniversary of the Institute of Biology).
The State of the Philippine Mangroves Proceedings (entitled: “Revisiting Learnings and Envisioning Philippine Mangroves in 2030”) was virtually launched on 15 October 2021. It was attended by > 200 participants from different sectors, and from overseas.
We co-organized the 3rd BCnet Luzon Virtual Workshop on 1 October 2021. The workshop facilitated the mangrove and seagrass mapping.
We co-organized the (Virtual) Workshop on “Capacity building on the IPCC 2013 Wetlands Supplement, FREL Diagnostic and Uncertainty Analysis” on 20-22 September 2021.
The project co-facilitated the 2nd BCnet-Luzon virtual meeting/workshop on 30 July 2021. Upcoming: mangrove change and biomass mapping.
We co-organized a webinar on Mangroves and Heavy Metals in Lake Uacon on 31 May 2021. Two MSc theses were presented on heavy metal retention (Lui Capua) and accumulation in molluscs (Khas Marbella).
The URC-funded project held its final (virtual) reporting/workshop with environmental managers/communities of Masinloc. Results of the study (in tables, maps and document formats) can be found here, https://maps.mangroveecology.com
As NAST Environmental Science Awardee, Dr. Salmo acted as one of the presenters in the NAST Symposium Series held in Tagbilaran City, Bohol on 21-22 November 2017. He presented “Mangrove Research and Management as Adaptation Strategy Against Sea Level Rise”. The symposium series aims to bring nationally-recognised scientists to go around the country and encourage students to pursue science courses.
Dr. Salmo participated and served as one of the evaluators in the biannual Para El Mar search for Most Outstanding Marine Protected Area in the Philippines. The event was held in Iloilo City.
Dr. Salmo attended the Annual Meeting of the International Blue Carbon Initiative (IBCI) – Scientific Working Group (SWG) Meeting in Ibiza, Spain on 9-13 October 2017.
Oral and poster presentations were conducted during the 2nd ASEAN Mangrove Congress held in Conrad Hotel, Manila on 4-8 September 2017. Here are the studies presented:

-
Nicha, J.P. and S.G. Salmo III. Application of Geo-chemical Indices on the Assessment of Heavy Metals in Mangrove Sediments in Lake Uacon, Candelaria, Zambales.
The project participated and served as Resource Person in the CTI Blue Carbon workshop held in Tagaytay City and Batangas on 28-31 August 2017. Dr. Salmo demonstrated sampling and measurement of blue carbon stocks in mangroves.
The project participated in the 39th Annual Scientific Meeting of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) held in Manila Hotel on 12-13 July 2017. Two posters were presented: “Catastrophic Typhoons and Post-Typhoon Recovery: The Role of Vegetation-Sediment-Macrofaunal Relationships in the Long-Term Survival of Philippine Mangroves” and “Assessment of Nutrient Utilization and Conservation in Typhoon-Damaged Mangroves Using Nutrient Content and Resorption Efficiency”
The 3rd Project Partner’s Meeting was held in Palompon, Leyte on 9-12 June 2017. The event was co-sponsored by the municipal government of Palompon. Please click this link for some details.
The project sponsored the Partners’ Training on Mangrove Vegetation, Elevation and Carbon Stock Assessment (Luzon) held in Masinloc, Zambales on 10-11 September 2016. The activity was held in partnership with the municipal government of Masinloc. This event also saw the installation of the first rod Surface Elevation Table (rSET) funded by a project partner. A similar mangrove training will be held for partners from the Visayas region soon. Photos can be found here.
