We are proud to share a recent paper co-authored by Dr. Severino Salmo III titled “UAV-based mangrove biomass estimation and carbon potential valuation in North Sumatra, Indonesia“, published in the journal Carbon Balance and Management.
The study utilized canopy height model data generated from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images to estimate the aboveground biomass (AGB) and carbon stocks of six coastal land cover types, including natural and restored mangrove stands. Results showed strong correlation between UAV-derived AGB and field-validated AGB which indicates that UAV systems provide reliable biomass estimates across coastal landscapes.
Below are selected figures from the study showing UAV-derived AGB maps of natural and restored mangrove stands in North Sumatra, Indonesia.
