World Bank PH-Funded Study on the Blue Carbon Potential in FMA 6 and 9 Commences

World Bank Philippines is currently funding BFAR’s Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency Project (FISHCORE) Project. The FISHCORE Project is 7-year project that prioritizes a comprehensive approach to fisheries governance, with a focus on the social and ecological dimensions of the Philippines Waters and its resources. To provide technical support to FISHCORE, World Bank Ph hired local consultants from UP Institute of Biology, UP Los Banos, and the Philippine Space Agency through the Marine Environment and Resources Foundation (MERF), Inc.

MERF Inc. will undertake a Work Bank Philippines-funded study under BFAR’s Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency Project (FISHCORE) Project. The study titled, “Assessing Mangrove and Seagrass Ecosystem’s Blue Carbon Potential in FMA 6 and 9 of the Philippines” aims to document and assess the total carbon stocks (TCS) in select areas in FMA 6 and 9, and provide a scientifically accurate basis for the conservation and restoration of mangroves. The study will run from March to September 2025.

On March 17, 2025, the study officially started with the presentation of the Inception Report. The study’s Team Leader, Dr. Sev Salmo III of UP Institute of Biology, detailed the study to BFAR and World Bank PH. The attendees (featured below) engaged in a discussion to set project activities, expectations, and deliverables.

We thank Ma’am Agnes Chung Balota of World Bank Ph for organizing the successful Inception meeting!
