Mangrove researchers around the globe released a new study that answers the long-standing question:
How long will it take for planted mangroves to store carbon at rates equal to intact stands?
Logistics models compiled from 40 years of data on ~700 planted mangrove stands indicate that it takes 20 years for carbon stored in planted mangroves to reach 71-73% of that found in intact stands. However, these findings do not mean that plantations are the best solution for restoration. Rather, researchers call for the conservation of intact stands since plantations cannot replace nor compensate conservation.
