PEER Asia Forum

The NAS/USAID/PEER program held its final PEER Asia Conference on 21-23 May 2004 in Bangkok, Thailand. The forum was attended by all PEER Asia cycle 9 grantees. Three of the co-grantees (from Indonesia and Vietnam) also work on mangrove research.

Dr. Salmo presented the highlights of the PEER ManCoRe project, “Assessment and Comparison of Recovery of Biodiversity and Carbon Sequestration in Philippine Mangroves Among Natural, Replanted and Naturally-recolonized Mangrove Stands”. Lessons, learnings, recommendations and future plans were also presented. Dr. Salmo’s presentation also tackled the capacity building, mentoring, local/national networking, and policy/governance inputs.

Aside from technical presentations, there were also networking activities. For the PEER mangrove network, there was a general consensus to sustain the research on biodiversity and “blue carbon”.

As the PEER program ends, the PIs commit to sustain the gains and the network.

Our project accomplished a lot on top of the promises declared in the proposal. The NAS/USAID/PEER provided several opportunities for us. We thank the NAS/USAID/PEER program.
