
PEER ManCoRe’s project leader Dr. Severino G. Salmo III was invited as one of the speakers for the Philippine Association of Marine Science (PAMS) 17th National Symposium of Marine Science in Batangas State University- Pablo Borbon Campus last July 19, 2023. In his plenary talk “Mangrove Restoration in the Philippines, for Whom? Lessons, Opportunities, and Moving Forward”, he penned an open letter to the members of the association and attendees of the symposium to take up the challenge in bridging the gap between scientific research and our social, economic, and political needs in the Philippines.
Dr. Salmo called for a more active involvement of the youth in marine science specifically in studies to developing policies and management strategies to improve existing mangrove restoration and conservation programs. He also paid tribute to his mentor Dr. Miguel D. Fortes, a notable marine scientist who was widely known for his research on mangroves and seagrasses in his talk.
